The Forgotten Camera from Nagyréde

It cost five euros.

I found the Zorki 6 in the small antique shop of my friend Daniel in Hungary and bought it without even checking whether it worked. An old Soviet rangefinder for the price of a coffee was enough of a reason.

The interesting part appeared only when I got home and opened the back.

There was still a roll of Fujicolor 200 inside.

And tucked into the camera was a small, faded label:

Suddenly the camera had an address.

The Zorki 6 was made by KMZ near Moscow between 1959 and 1966. It was a relatively inexpensive 35mm rangefinder, fitted with an M39 screw mount and designed as a practical camera rather than a luxury object. This particular example somehow made its way from the Soviet Union to Hungary and, eventually, to Nagyréde, a village beneath the Mátra hills.

The address on the label still exists.

Looking through old Street View imagery, I found a modest house at Szabadság út 30. In 2011 a large street-facing window was still visible, entirely consistent with the sort of small photographic and service businesses that once operated from houses throughout rural Hungary.

That is where the evidence stops.

I don't know who owned the camera. I don't know when the Fujicolor film was loaded, what was photographed on it, or why the camera was eventually put away with the film still inside.

And perhaps that is precisely what makes it interesting.

The Zorki itself isn't particularly rare or valuable. Hundreds of thousands of Soviet cameras travelled throughout Eastern Europe. Most have lost their individual histories completely.

This one retained three small clues: a roll of film, a photographer's label and an address.

The film is still undeveloped.

For the moment, I rather like it that way. Somewhere inside this five-euro camera may be a handful of photographs made decades ago in Hungary.

Or there may be absolutely nothing.

Both possibilities belong to the story.
